Ever considered reusable nappies?

Bambino Mio Reuseable NappiesIn celebration of Real Nappy Week, we are delighted to share with you this guest post from our partner organisation Bambino Mio which explains why they believe reusable nappies are so important and how it all began for them.

Bambino Mio have been a fantastic supporter of BabyNatal since our classes went UK-wide in early 2012 and we love their easy-to-use nappies. In addition, they have an extra special place in our hearts, as they, like The Natal Company, are a Northamptonshire based family organisation whose roots can be traced back to their own parenting experiences.

Today, more and more parents are choosing to use reusable nappies as they begin to see the many benefits:

  • better for you – you can save up to £700 by using reusable nappies
  • better for baby – reusable nappies use absorbent fabric rather than chemical gels, which can in turn reduce nappy rash
  • better for the environment – reusable nappies are up to 40% better for the environment than disposable nappies*

Jo Schanschieff, who is also mother to 3 says “when becoming a parent, you suddenly reassess the way you look at the world and how you impact upon it and when raising a child, your impact on the environment suddenly becomes more important as you look to the next generation.”

Each day 8 million disposable nappies are sent to landfill in the UK alone; this equates to 3 billion nappies being thrown away each year and in Northampton alone each year we throw away over 2400 tonnes of disposable nappies which end up in landfill. Bambino Mio recommends you need around 15 – 40 reusable nappies depending on what type of nappy you choose and how often you wish to use them. Remember, your reusable nappies can be used on more than one child or passed to a friend or relative to use afterwards.

Miosolo Bambino MioThis week is Real Nappy Week (15th – 21st April) where brands and retailers are joining forces to spread the word about reusable nappies. Modern reusable nappies are simple and are as easy to use as a disposable! Even if one reusable nappy is used per day in place of your disposable, you are saving money and making a significant impact to your overall waste reduction. You can also get help to switch to reusables with many councils running schemes – for example, in Northamptonshire the County Council run an incentive scheme for parents who purchase reusable nappies, with every £60 spent on reusable nappies, you can claim £25 back!
